Sleep Is Never Just About Sleep

We don't start with a method - we start with the child.

Sleep is never just about sleep.

When a parent tells me, “My baby won’t sleep,” my first question isn’t:

“What sleep method should we use?”

It’s:

“What’s going on here?”

Because sleep doesn’t happen in isolation.

A baby’s development, temperament, biology, and current stage all matter.

So does the caregiver who is showing up at 2:00 a.m. exhausted, anxious, or unsure of what to do next.

So does the relationship between the child and caregiver — attachment, responsiveness, connection, and separation.

And so does the larger context surrounding the family: culture, values, resources, family structure, stress, and experiences that may shape how everyone is approaching sleep.

Two babies can have the exact same sleep behavior and need completely different support.

That’s why I don’t believe in looking at a sleep problem and immediately prescribing a sleep solution.

We have to understand the whole family first.

Sleep support should make room for the baby and the person caring for them.

It should consider the relationship, not work against it.

And it should fit the family — not force the family to fit the method.

Because sometimes the answer really is a change to the sleep environment or routine.

And sometimes the answer is reassurance.

Sometimes it’s helping a parent rebuild confidence.

Sometimes it’s supporting a separation.

Sometimes it’s recognizing that this family is simply going through a hard season.

Good sleep support starts with curiosity before intervention.

That’s the kind of sleep consulting I believe in. 🤍
